I’m Ignas te Wiel, born in 1969 and involved in massage/bodywork since my teens. My Indonesian stepfather taught me my first massage techniques and introduced me to my first Taiji teacher. Before I knew it I was treating family and friends and never stopped ever since!
I mentioned Taiji because it taught me to appreciate body awareness, connected movement and it’s importance for overall wellbeing. After high school I decided to study physiotherapy because I wanted to know more about bodywork and the (moving) human body.
During this study I was trained within the framework of classical anatomy, biomechanics and pathology/diagnostics. After I graduated in 1994 I started working as a substitute in several practices and did that for a few years but somehow working as a physiotherapist was not fulfilling enough, it felt like something was missing. It was as if, at least for me, I missed tools to help clients effectively ( not to say that it didn’t work all the time, but on average) to my satisfaction. So I decided to stop working as a physiotherapist but never stopped working as a massage therapist including a 7,5 yrs period in different wellness centers which was an excellent way to deepen experience in technique and feeling/palpation skills ( back then we were talking about an average of 1,5 thousand sessions a year!). In 2010 after some 26 years of treating people I started my own practice under the name of knead to relax and based on massage therapy but quite quickly after I started working as a Bowen therapist and even more with the addition of visceral therapy the frequency of massage sessions dropped in favor of manual therapy, an organic proces fitting to my own evolution as a therapist up until the point in 2023 when I took massage out of the equation altogether to be able to fully focus on my work as a manual therapist.
In 2011 I first came into contact with the Bowen therapy through an Australian friend but it wasn’t until 2014 that I decided to go and study this technique. I must say it was like a veil was lifted!, the new insights in the dynamics of the connective tissue (fascia) and the logic of using that in the framework of Bowen therapy for me where the missing pieces I had been looking for. Now I could treat clients not only more effectively but also in a much more holistic context. Another nice side effect of studying connective tissue was that all of sudden the feeling of total connection during Taiji practice now had a very clear basis, something that was hard to explain through classical anatomy and mechanics alone.
In 2019 I started training in the visceral therapy developed by the French osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral in which the understanding of structural and functional relationships throughout the body via connective tissues are taken to an even higher level of understanding.
Through continuous training I keep developing in this inspiring forms of bodywork and meanwhile I see the beautiful results and wide variety of complaints where it can be used for successfully in my practice.
I hope I can be of service in the future!
